The Final Push for the "Success Sequence" to Teach Kids the Path Out of Poverty

Time is running out to protect Ohio children and families before the legislature leaves for summer break on June 10.

While lawmakers will return for the post-election "lame-duck" session, that period is notoriously chaotic. We must get critical bills across the finish line now.

We expected a House floor vote on the Success Sequence bill (SB156) yesterday. While that vote did not happen, our momentum has not stalled. Following the Memorial Day recess, the next opportunity for a floor vote is Wednesday, June 2.

This common-sense bill requires schools to teach the proven pathway out of poverty:

  1. Graduate high school.

  2. Get a full-time job in your 20s.

  3. Marry before having children.

The data shows 97% of young adults who follow this Success Sequence avoid poverty. It is also one of the key policy solutions to strengthen Ohio families suggested in CCV’s Hope and a Future report.

We must continue to cover this critical bill in prayer. Please pray that the Speaker of the House brings SB156 to the floor on Wednesday, June 2. Pray for absolute unity among representatives to pass it, and for a swift concurrence vote in the Senate.

Because the Senate already passed SB156, the changes the House made must go back to the Senate for a "concurrence vote." This is a straightforward, up-or-down approval vote—no further amendments or changes can be made. Once the Senate concurs, the legislative process is complete, and the bill heads straight to Governor Mike DeWine’s desk for his approval. He will have 10 days to sign it into law, veto it, or let is become law without his signature.
