Ohio’s Medical Aid in Dying Act is a Trojan Horse for Mandated Death

While activists attempt to frame state-sponsored euthanasia as "death with dignity" and a "right to die," it will ultimately become a "duty to die." At a press conference at the Ohio Statehouse on Thursday, April 23, Representative Eric Synenberg (D-Beachwood) introduced the Ohio Medical Aid in Dying (MAID) Act, which would legalize doctor-prescribed suicide in our state.

In a disturbing admission to the outlet, Synenberg noted that this legislation was spurred in part by an assisted-suicide series in cleveland.com | The Plain Dealer.

It should be a major red flag when mainstream media outlets, politicians, and “Big Pharma” collaborate to normalize the killing of the vulnerable. Synenberg’s bill is not a simple policy debate, nor is it about loving our neighbors well with empathetic care options. “Medical Aid in Dying” is nothing more than a euphemism for the coordinated assault on the sanctity of life, driven by money rather than true care for the human person.

We have already seen the devastating results in places like Canada. What begins as a "compassionate" option rapidly expands into a nightmare. It becomes a business where insurance companies deny life-saving treatments while offering suicide as a cost-effective alternative. This puts immense financial pressure on families—especially the poor—to "pull the plug" to remain solvent.

Contrast this "duty to die" with the witness of former Senator Ben Sasse. Recently diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer, Sasse rejected the hollow "dignity" of a hastened death. Instead, he called death a "wicked thief" and argued that "the process of dying is still something to be lived." Sasse is an incredible public example of how life never loses its value, even in its final, most difficult chapters.

Reality is that the safety of our most vulnerable citizens is at risk. If we don’t protect life in the womb, we cannot expect the state to protect it at the end of life. Doctors should be in the business of healing, not killing. Ohio must remain a state that treasures every heartbeat and rejects any attempt to institutionalize the culture of death.

CCV is committed to blocking any legislative effort to allow Ohio to become a (MAID) state. We must stand together to ensure that our healthcare system remains focused on providing true care and support, not a mandated death sentence for the crime of being ill, elderly, lonely, or poor.
