The U.S. Department of Justice sued Anne Arundel County in Maryland on Tuesday over what it says is a school policy allowing students to pursue a gender transition at school while hiding it from their parents.
The lawsuit seeks to stop the policy. The department’s claim is direct: school officials may not help a child take steps tied to gender ideology at school and keep that information from the child’s mother or father.
The case matters beyond one Maryland county. Across the country, school policies that separate children from parents on questions of sex and identity have become a central battleground. Parents cannot guide, protect or care for their children when a public school treats them as outsiders in their own child’s life.
Public schools serve families. They do not replace them. When gender ideology drives school policy, children bear the risk and parents lose the trust that every school system needs to function.
The next step is in court, where the Justice Department is asking for the Anne Arundel County policy to be stopped.
