Texas Children’s Hospital has launched the nation’s first detransition clinic under a settlement with the Department of Justice. The clinic will serve patients who previously received transition-related treatments and will provide care for patients up to age 21 who received transition services.
The clinic will offer endocrinology, surgery, mental health care, fertility counseling and speech pathology. Patients older than 21 can also receive obstetric and gynecologic care through the clinic. Under the settlement, Texas Children’s must provide detransition care free of charge for five years.
The settlement also bars the hospital from performing gender-transition services for minors. The hospital’s new website is accepting appointment requests, though an official opening date has not been released.
For the country, this is a major shift. One of the nation’s best-known children’s hospitals is now required to care for young people after transition-related interventions while stopping those services for minors. Families deserve medical systems that tell the truth about the human body, protect children from sex-rejecting procedures and provide real care to those who seek to detransition.
The next test is whether other hospitals and public officials will recognize the same duty. Children and young adults who were led into life-altering treatments should not be left without help when they seek a different path.
