Earlier this afternoon, the Senate Education Committee unanimously passed Senate Bill 158 (SB158) to ban cellphone use in public school buildings, on school grounds, and/or on school premises during school hours.

What's Next?

Sponsored by Senator Jane Timken (R-Jefferson Township), SB158 must now be heard in the full Senate Chamber for a floor vote. After that, it will repeat the process in the Ohio House of Representatives, first being heard in a House committee.

This standalone bill is similar to a provision in the State Operating Budget, which has been passed by the House and is currently under debate in the Senate. Committee passage increases the likelihood that a version of this proposal will make it through one way or another.
