Attorney General Dave Yost and Speaker of the Ohio House of Representatives Matt Huffman are co-hosting a press conference today—Monday, July 21, at 2:30 pm—to respond to the summary judgment Franklin County Judge Jaiza Page issued last month in favor of a coalition of public school districts that challenged the constitutionality of Ohio's EdChoice Scholarship Program.

Did you know?

If the EdChoice program were to be dismantled by the court and those students were to return to their public schools, it would cost taxpayers almost $1.5 billion, far exceeding the cost of the scholarship program.

Much of Judge Page's ruling centers on what she calls the underfunding of Ohio public schools, despite the fact that Ohio spends over $15,000 per student. She cites Columbus City Schools as an example, even though the district receives $25,000 per student annually. Meanwhile, the maximum EdChoice scholarship is $8,400.

In addition, Ohio school districts possess a collective $10.5 billion in cash reserves, more than double what they were ten years ago, despite declining enrollment.

Although Judge Page ruled the EdChoice program unconstitutional, she stayed the order until a final verdict is reached, allowing EdChoice scholarships to continue while the case is appealed.

We are confident that this egregious decision will be ultimately overturned.
