Excellence in Babylon

When we look at the breakdown of excellence in our schools, corporate boardrooms, healthcare systems, universities, and local governments, it is easy to point fingers at secular agendas. Yet, we must candidly ask: how much of this vacuum exists because God’s people quietly surrendered the very institutions we were called to steward with truth and grace?
The Sacred Vacuum and Our Retreat
For decades, cultural strategists have executed a deliberate "long march through the institutions," systematically dismantling Christian moral foundations across education, medicine, philosophy, and government. The tragedy, however, is not merely that secularism marched in, but that believers retreated, labeling marketplace and civic leadership as "worldly" rather than as arenas of divine calling. As corporate entities and local school boards navigate sweeping regulatory shifts and moral confusion, our communities are feeling the deep pain of leadership built on shifting sand.
The Daniel Standard
Scripture shows us that God never called His people to isolate from public institutions, but to transform them through unyielding character and undeniable skill. Daniel served at the highest levels of a pagan Babylonian administration. He stood out not through political posturing, but through unmatched competence and Christlike humility: "[T]hey could find no ground for complaint or any fault, because he was faithful, and no error or fault was found in him" (Daniel 6:4). Daniel and his companions proved "ten times better" in wisdom and capability than their secular peers (Daniel 1:20).
Likewise, Paul courageously stepped into the elite philosophical center of Athens at the Areopagus (Acts 17) and stood firm before governors and kings. The Apostle urged believers that whatever work they undertake—whether in municipal government, science, or the arts—they are to "Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men" (Colossians 3:23).
Reclaiming Every Square Inch
Great Christian thinkers have long reminded us that Christ claims authority over every human endeavor. Dutch theologian and Prime Minister Abraham Kuyper famously wrote, "There is not a square inch in the whole domain of our human existence over which Christ, who is Sovereign over all, does not cry, 'Mine!'" (Kuyper).
Likewise, CS Lewis warned against intellectual surrender: "Good philosophy must exist, if for no other reason, because bad philosophy needs to be answered."
It is time to raise up and commission a new generation of Daniel-like leaders who will step into local government, education, medicine, and business with uncompromised truth and servant-hearted excellence.
Practical Steps for the Ohio Pastor
Preach a Biblical Theology of Vocation: Teach your congregation that serving as a principal, scientist, attorney, or city council member is a sacred calling where Christ must be honored through moral integrity and professional excellence.
Commission Workplace Leaders: Host dedicated prayer services to lay hands on and encourage church members currently serving on local school boards, in municipal offices, healthcare networks, and business leadership.
Guide the Next Generation: Encourage students and young adults in your church to pursue high-impact fields like philosophy, law, journalism, and local policy rather than defaulting to cultural withdrawal.
